At Orange County, FL Rodent Pros, we know how to get rids of rats in your Williamsburg area building for good. With our vast knowledge of rat behavior and building construction, we will inspect every inch of your house or building – from top to bottom – and find every possible entry point. Once we have permanently sealed up all the holes, typically with heavy steel mesh or metal plating that rats can’t chew through, then we can start the Williamsburg rodent trapping process.

rat eradication methods

The best rat trap: Believe it or not, the tried-and-true, low-tech mouse trap (snap trap) – a simple piece of wood with a spring-loaded bar – is the most effective and humane way to kill a rat. Snap traps kill rats instantly, they are inexpensive and reusable, and they can fit in small spaces. Do not worry about the bait – you can use anything from peanut butter to fruit to – yes, cheese.

We service Orange and Williamsburg, including the towns of Apopka, Altamonte Springs, Casselberry, Longwood, Heathrow, Lake Mary, Oviedo, Fern Park, Maitland, Lockhart, Winter Park, Ocoee, Winter Garden, Pine Hills, Doctor Phillips, Pine Castle, Belle Isle, the Conway area, and College Park. The northern end of our range is Deltona and Kissimmee makes up the southern end.

Their use for roof rats is limited to control within structures because roof rats rarely produce burrows. Lethal control often combines the use of rodenticides with non-toxic control measures such as snap traps or glue boards. Wire-mesh, live traps (Tomahawk®, Havahart®) are available for trapping rats. The muzzle of the roof rat is pointed and the overall appearance of the roof rat is much more streamlined and sleek looking than a Norway rat. Make sure that all doors, windows and screens fit tightly in their frames and repair those that do not. Eliminate vines growing on buildings and, when feasible, overhanging tree limbs that may be used as travel routes. Rats will also drag their tails, leaving a mark between their feet tracks. Once established, they readily breed and thrive within buildings, just as Norway rats do.

Parks with natural and artificial ponds, or reservoirs may also be infested. Grease marks are produced as the rodent travels along an edge, and the oils in their fur are deposited. Snails are a favorite food, but don’t expect roof rats to eliminate a garden snail problem. Seal any openings larger than ¼ inch with caulk, wood, mesh, or other appropriate materials. They are very strong, and can injure your fingers. If the food is in an exposed area and too large to be eaten quickly, but not too large to be moved, they will usually carry it to a hiding place before eating it. Please also read the section on Sanitation, as it is an important consideration in rodent control. Roof rats are prodigious breeders.

Care must be exercised to ensure that baits are properly placed and the use instructions on the product’s label are strictly followed. Their design makes them more rat-specific when used out-of-doors than ordinary snap traps that sometimes take birds. I highly recommend snap traps, not live cage traps, certainly not glue boards, and most definitely not poison! Never poison rats, it doesn't solve the problem and it just creates more problems. The latter two were ineffective for roof rats. Specifications may vary depending on bait manufacturer even though the active ingredient may be the same. In food-processing and storage facilities, they will feed on nearly all food items, though their food preferences may differ from those of Norway rats. Adult females are able to reproduce at 3-5 months old, can produce up to five litters each year with about 5-8 young in each litter. Norway rats are usually active at dusk or during the night and are inactive during daylight hours.
