The best rat trap: Believe it or not, the tried-and-true, low-tech mouse trap (snap trap) – a simple piece of wood with a spring-loaded bar – is the most effective and humane way to kill a rat. Snap traps kill rats instantly, they are inexpensive and reusable, and they can fit in small spaces. Do not worry about the bait – you can use anything from peanut butter to fruit to – yes, cheese.

Grease marks (from the oil and dirt of rats) often appear along walls next to runways. Rub marks - rats get coated with dirt and they like to rub against the walls to find their way around a room’s perimeter, since they can't see so well. When droppings are seen, it is a good practice to remove those droppings and later inspect to see whether new droppings were deposited. They may live in the landscaping of one residence and feed at another. A few instances of first-generation anticoagulant resistance have been reported in roof rats; although not common, it may be underestimated because so few resistance studies have been conducted on this species. Wire-mesh, live traps (Tomahawk®, Havahart®) are available for trapping rats. Rat removal expert’s rat control technicians are properly trained in how to get rid of rats and the elimination of rat problems using a variety of rat control techniques. Trapping

  • What is the best bait to trap a rat?

The Norway rat is also called brown rat, house rat, sewer rat, and wharf rat. Glue boards will catch roof rats, but, like traps, they must be located on beams, rafters, and along other travel routes, making them more difficult to place effectively for roof rats than for Norway rats or house mice. Neophobia is more pronounced in roof rats than in Norway rats. Generally, Roof rats stay within 100 miles inland. They prefer to consume fruits (sometimes referred to as the “fruit rat” or “citrus rat”) and nuts, although roof rats are omnivorous and will feed on almost anything available to them. Avoid using poison and glue traps, as these are inhumane and cause more problems than they solve. They may not be effective on roof rats, however, because of their usual placement. Norway rats are a common mammalian pest of rice, but sometimes roof rats also feed on newly planted seed or the seedling as it emerges.

Certain first-generation anticoagulants are registered as tracking powders for roof rat control; however, none of the second generation materials are so registered. They usually don't leave the attic for very long. Most commercial baits are registered for both species of rats and for house mice, but often they are less acceptable to roof rats than to the other species. A rat does not want to be exposed to danger outside for very long! If you think you can just seal shut the entry holes into the house during the daylight when they are outside, that is incorrect. Landscaped residential or industrial areas provide good habitat, as does riparian vegetation of riverbanks and streams. They are very strong, and can injure your fingers. The roof rat is more at home in warm climates, and apparently less adaptable, than the Norway rat, which is why it has not spread throughout the country. Other vegetable, melon, berry, and fruit crops occasionally suffer relatively minor damage when adjacent to infested habitat such as riparian vegetation.
