With our vast knowledge of rat behavior and building construction, we will inspect every inch of your house or building – from top to bottom – and find every possible entry point. Once we have permanently sealed up all the holes, typically with heavy steel mesh or metal plating that rats can’t chew through, then we can start the Piedmont rodent trapping process.

Snap traps kill rats instantly, they are inexpensive and reusable, and they can fit in small spaces. Do not worry about the bait – you can use anything from peanut butter to fruit to – yes, cheese.

Rats rely more on their keen senses of smell, taste, touch, and hearing than on vision. The key is to control rat populations, not individual rats. Roof rats are not protected by law and can be controlled any time with mechanical or chemical methods. Within a year, one female may be responsible for up to 40 new rodents. While rats can live in the walls, the kitchen, under the house, etc. the most common place for rats to inhabit in a house is the attic. The long, sensitive whiskers (vibrissae) near their nose and the guard hairs on their body are used as tactile sensors. A preferred categorization would be “anticoagulants” and “non-anticoagulants” or “other rodenticides. In the third week they begin to take solid food.

Droppings - Roof Rat droppings are 1/4 to 1/2 inch in length, capsule shaped, with blunt ends. Adult roof rats usually live about one year. Walk only on the wooden beams in the attic, never the sheet rock, or you could fall through the ceiling! Be careful, an attic is a hazardous place, where it can be easy to fall, or poke a roofing nail in your head. These can be identified by the brown smudges of grease that comes from the rat's fur, and should all be sealed to prevent future rat infestations in the attic. In the third week they begin to take solid food. Also, Norway rats may prey upon fish, poultry, mice, birds, small reptiles and amphibians. Neophobia is more pronounced in roof rats than in Norway rats. Floor drains and sewer pipes should have tight-fitting grates with openings less than 1/4 inch in diameter.

Some traps should be placed on the floor, but more should be placed above floor level (for example, on top of stacked commodities). Always be sure that fresh bait is available continuously until rats stop feeding. Severe pruning and/or removal of certain ornamentals are often required to obtain a degree of lasting rat control. For rats, all openings greater than 1/2" should be sealed. Roof rats are prodigious breeders. Use enough traps to eliminate the rodents quickly. Raisins, prunes, peanut butter, nutmeats, and gumdrops make good baits and are often better than meat or cat food baits. If you've sealed the house correctly, then you shouldn't trap any new rats after just the first three days.
