The best rat trap: Believe it or not, the tried-and-true, low-tech mouse trap (snap trap) – a simple piece of wood with a spring-loaded bar – is the most effective and humane way to kill a rat. Snap traps kill rats instantly, they are inexpensive and reusable, and they can fit in small spaces. Do not worry about the bait – you can use anything from peanut butter to fruit to – yes, cheese.

A rat does not want to be exposed to danger outside for very long! If you think you can just seal shut the entry holes into the house during the daylight when they are outside, that is incorrect. The young may continue to nurse until 4 or 5 weeks old. Bait blocks are easy to place in small areas and difficult-to-reach locations out of the way of children, pets, and nontarget species. Rodent-proofing against roof rats usually requires more time to find entry points than for Norway rats because of their greater climbing ability. Most commercial baits are registered for both species of rats and for house mice, but often they are less acceptable to roof rats than to the other species. Traps should be placed flush with walls in areas of highest travel (as determined by Inspection). The young may continue to nurse until 4 or 5 weeks old. Roof rats usually require water daily, though their local diet may provide an adequate amount if it is high in water content.

Check the traps periodically, remove any dead trapped rats, and reset the traps. They may eat vegetation, but prefer to meat or meat-related wastes. The long, sensitive whiskers (vibrissae) near their nose and the guard hairs on their body are used as tactile sensors. Presently, only one such modified trap is commercially available. If you do it wrong the first time, you'll just end up paying more later. When rodent-proofing against roof rats, pay close attention to the roof and roof line areas to assure all accesses are closed. If roof rats are seen exposed, it often indicates their hiding spaces are all filled by other rats or that they have been disturbed, such as by construction. Rickettsial Diseases - various forms of Typhus fall into this category and can also be carried by rat-borne parasites.

There's nothing fun about finding rats around your home or property. One of the more common techniques for bait use is to place the bait formulation in a tamper proof rodent bait station that protects the bait from accidental exposure to non-target animals or people. In most of our urban areas, Norway rats may be seen scurrying around after dark looking for food in garbage cans and other places where human refuse is found. They are constantly exploring surroundings and notice changes and are suspicious by nature. One of the more common techniques for bait use is to place the bait formulation in a tamper proof rodent bait station that protects the bait from accidental exposure to non-target animals or people. They may be frightened by sound-producing devices for awhile but they become accustomed to constant and frequently repeated sounds quickly. Since roof rats rarely dig burrows, burrow fumigants are of limited use; however, if they have constructed burrows, then fumigants that are effective on Norway rats, such as aluminum phosphide and gas cartridges, will be effective on roof rats. Body is smaller and sleeker than the Norway rat’s.
